Black Hawk Maintenance Trainer (BHMT)

The UH-60M Black Hawk Maintenance Trainer (BHMT) is built from retired Category B, crash damaged, or purchased airframe and is used for the development of maintenance skills for U.S. Army Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) 15T10 and 15T30 level personnel.  It is used to train system familiarization, component identification, servicing tasks and inspections, Maintenance Operational Checks (MOCs), Fault Isolation Procedures, and Remove and Install (R/I) tasks in support of UH-60M Aviation Unit Level Maintenance (AVUM).  The BHMT-M provides realistic, safe, high fidelity training for ground maintenance operations and procedures.  It is the primary training media to strengthen maintenance personnel skills and knowledge in:

  • Maintenance task related skills and knowledge
  • Maintenance practices and repair procedures
  • Use of common and special tools, and test equipment
  • Advanced skills development

The BHMT-M trainer is ruggedized for the training environment to provide high life cycle task performance at low cost and provides for isolation of task environments for system familiarization to support the 15T MOS at the 10 and 30 levels.

The BHMT-M consists of a Hardware Training Device (HTD) with a Mobile Power Supply Unit (MPSU), an Instructor Operator’s Station (IOS), Trainer System Software, IOS Software, and an Air Conditioning Unit within the Computer Equipment Rack.  The HTD is representative of a UH-60M aircraft, incorporating simulated systems, requiring electrical and hydraulic power from the MPSU.  The BHMT-M training system retains the original look and characteristics of the UH-60M helicopter, with the addition of maintenance platforms to facilitate training.  The forward L/H and R/H sides of the work platforms allow for rotor blade installation and transmission, engine, and APU R/I, and other tasks requiring safe access to the top of the trainer.  The BHMT-M comes with UH-60M composite modeled stubby rotor blades that are nine and a half feet long and replicate the shape, twist, and anhedral tip of an actual UH-60M rotor blade.  A tail rotor stand is provided to allow R/I tasks on the tail rotor and tail rotor gear box.  The work platforms come with gates that have safety sensors to prevent the rotor blades from turning if a gate is opened.  A sensor is provided to prevent rotation of the rotor system if the tail rotor stand is in a position to interfere with the tail rotor blades.  An additional sensor prevents the system from rotating if the railings are not in the down position.

Physical and functional fidelity requirements for all components are defined in a customer-provided Fidelity Matrix.  The IOS enables the instructor to monitor and control the training scenario, observe and evaluate student performance, and check system status.  The IOS provides two modes, one for training and the other for maintenance.

LSI, Inc. designs, develops, manufactures and delivers high fidelity Black Hawk helicopter training devices for the Utility Helicopter Project Office (UHPO) for use at the U.S. Army Aviation training facilities at Ft. Eustis, VA and Ft. Indiantown Gap, PA. Ten devices have been delivered on time and in budget to the U.S. Army. LSI has delivered one trainer for the Taiwan Army under a foreign military sales (FMS) case.
